And when we witness miracles such as habitats returning to their full glory after being ravaged by humans or natural disasters, it is a reminder that we too are capable of such resilience despite, you know, the horrors of life. 1

“Decentralization” means that the mechanisms maintaining those functions are scattered throughout the system, not located exclusively together, so that a localized disturbance doesn’t remove one or more vital parts of the whole system. 2

How does this apply to people?

I think one key way we can translate this into our lives is where we derive our value from let’s say for the sake of conversation that you are someone that is very attached to their professional or academic career and you get most of your joy and validation from it. And let’s also say for the sake of conversation that, beyond the 40 hours of your work week, your social circles are completely tied to your job and it is the core way in which you relate to your peers. And let’s say for reasons beyond your control that this job is pulled out from under you.

Another very unfortunately prominent example of this is when someone’s romantic partner is at the dead center of their lives and everything revolves around them.3
